It depends on how large the memory stick is. You're better off burning them...

DVD holds 4.7GB

You can burn your music to DVD it doesn't matter than the format is DVD. DVD holds more data than a CD and probably more than your memory stick.

You can if you want too. But you can buy a 1 gig thumb drive or flash drive to move those files also or back them up on a CD-R/W etc..
that should be fine with a 2GB memory stick. That is how I did it.

I would avoid Vista like the plague. Remember Windows ME? Same problems - same BS hype. Stick with XP until MS works out all of the bugs (or gives us a better OS)
Why don't you just network the two computers? You should be able to easily determine how big your music folder is and what you'd need to transfer it. I use a storage drive for my vids photos and tunes.
Depends on how big the memory stick is, usually 300 songs can run from anywhere up from a minimal of 2 gigs. So you could easily burn them all to a disc them take them off the disc and put them on your new computer, or you can transfer say 100 songs at a time on the usb stick.

External hard drives are handy to have around but for you there is no need for it. A cross over cable is pretty much useless too unless you really want one.

note: not all ibm laptop has a windows start button. you can use an alternative shortcut ctrl+esc at the same time to bring up the start button. depending on the video, you may need to download the codecs for it. example, wmv files are windows movie video files.

No. The boot CD from your friend's laptop most likely has an OEM version of Windows XP on it. That means it's only licensed to be used on the machine that it came with. One way to tell is to look at the CD. If it says anything like "for distribution only with a new PC," then it's definitely an OEM version.

Whether it's OEM or not, using your friend's CD to install XP on your laptop would be pirating. Don't go there!

If you want to install XP on your new laptop that came with Vista, you're going to have to bite the bullet and shell out for a new retail copy of XP.

The only way to put XP on a Vista machine is by formatting the hard drive and installing a full verison of XP. XP cannot go on a the second dual boot b/c the newer verison has to be loaded last. Your friends CD will most likely not work b/c it will look for hardware that may not be installed on your computer.
It can't. The CD or DVD will not functioning by default. The manufacturer usually includes program to identify if that machine used to recover or install the OS...is the correct target.

I absolutely hate windows vista. it looks a lot softer and nicer but it lacks a lot. will microsoft come out with some sort of software or upgrade to make your hardware(printer, graphics card, etc) and software(older games) with vista or is vista gonna suck forever? the reason i ask this question is because i need a new laptop and sooner or later i won't be able to choose the option of having xp on my computer. and installing xp is a hassle.

It's not up to Microsoft to release drivers for printers, graphics cards, modems, etc. They have been unfairly blamed in this. It's up to the manufacturer's to release drivers that work with Vista for their products. Many companies have been slack in this even though they have had the specs for Vista for years.

Backward compatibility for games would be good but it's unlikely. Microsoft will look to move forward and new software will be created to replace the old, just like new games will make you forget about the old ones.

Vista SP1 is in select beta testing at present and is scheduled for full release in the late spring or early summer of 2008. Even then it would be avdisable to wait another couple of months after that to ensure it is stable and not full of bugs.

Actually, I'm a real big fan of dc++ network hubs which is where I got my copy.

Remember to grab the activation workaround along with the disc image. and also....it'll come with instructions but in case you get a head of yourself don't use a serial key on install (leave it blank) makes the activation workaround process much easier later on

don't bother. vista is still incredibly buggy and insecure. either wait a year or two before you upgrade, or if you need a new OS now for free, try ubuntu linux. it is always free and legal, it is very stable, and there are loads of places on the internet to get help if you run in to any problems.
Vista is a commercial software product. Downloading it without paying for it is illegal. And even if you do, it won't help. Microsoft has gotten tired of hundreds of millions of criminals stealing their software, so Vista has some strong anti-piracy measures built in. When you install Vista, you have to connect to Microsoft's servers to activate it. Activation uses a unique code that can only be used for one computer. If you have an illegal copy of Vista, it won;t activate. In 30 days your computer will go into reduced functionality mode. It will remove all desktop icons and the start menu, and then it will start IE and take you to the Microsoft site where you can purchase a legal copy of the OS. If you don't, it will shut your computer down after one hour of use.

It'a a PITA for legit, honest users, but a bunch of bad apples spoiled it for everyone else.

Sounds like a memory problem. You have so much stuff running that it takes a forcing of cache to get enough space to display the pictures. Try turning off all the unneeded add ons that load at start and closing out a few programs that are running in the background. Might want to check the virtual memory settings (help menu will guide you) and do a disk cleanup and defrag through system tools. As a last resort, spend money and buy a memory upgrade.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the the web ..I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. I plugged in a 512mb flashdrive into my laptop with vista, and it allowed me to allocate about 440mb of my flashdrive. I opened task manager to see if that had made any difference to the RAM total allocation, but the figure remained the same at 2GB.

Can someone explain their experience with this? HAve you tried and tested this to see if it works? Because if it does, then that would be marvellous!!!

I have read various opinions on this. Some say it works, some don't. I personally have used it. I did not see a noticeable difference. Just yesterday I removed my ready boost option. I no longer have a flash drive installed. Granted it was by necessity that I removed it. I had to plug in something else and did not have a extra USB port. However in using my computer today, I have not missed the ready boost option.

first you have to enable file and printer sharing on the XP computer. once you do, go to the vista computer, click on start, run and type the name of the XP computer. it will open a window with the shared folder and printers on XP. or you can do step 1 on the XP computer and then go to add printer select network printer and then provide the path of the printer which will be "\\XP computer name\printer name as shown on XP" and you will be all set.

i would stay with xp. vista looks very nice and has some nice touches but you seem to need double of every thing to do the same job IE a fast processor and much more memory. so if you upgrade it's going to cost a lot more. it's properly cheaper to buy a new computer with vista already installed.
I use vista home premium, I think it's the best OS yet, clean design, uses DX10, flip 3D, but that's only true on high end computers with recent components, you will end up with a ton of bugs with anything mid range or lower.
Do not get vista, It looks all nice and shiney but it is still a prototype and hardly supports anything, like programs, games, apps, etc...

The general answer is by giving full adminstrator equivalent rights to the person's ID on the machine. It is not possible to have two "administrators" nor to eliminate the primary administrator. This applies to all machines with multiuser access. On Vista, you will probably as adminstrator go in to the user management section. Since I expect to avoid Vista as long as possible, that is as far as I can go. In XP, it is on Control Panel, User Accounts.

Not A Good Idea!!!! Not everything will work. And the drivers you need will not work with Windows. Mac has its own installer that Windows does not have! ALso you might not even be able to install Vista. The installer might not be reconized unless its for Mac. Which there is not such. Just get bootcamp. And enjoy the feeling of XP. ANd you will have to Genuine, and Validate it which costs money for a code that expires in like a month. Its around the price 150 usd. Not worth it.

You probably should start by disabling the parental controls in your computer. Unless you are not the administrator on the computer. Then you are going to have to ask that person to adjust them or turn them off for you.

Have the battery checked and check battery connections. It sounds like your fuel pump could be acting up. They can operate just good enough for your engine to run but won't deliver enough fuel to work under loaded conditions. Also check the throttle plate to see if it is closing 100% of the time, you can work it by hand.

I had a Colt E that did something similar. It started ok but it needed to have gas going in at all times, except in neutral. It began after I had gotten a jumpstart when I left the headlights on. Nobody could figure it out but it went away by itself after about a year. It wasted a lot of gas.

The way I solved this problem was I opened the volume controls and manually adjusted the sound until I was happy with the sound output. Im running a trial of Vista Ultimate and I have really had no issue with it. Granted the layout is quite different kind of like being used to Win98 and then going to WinXP. Im pretty well used to it now and I will more than likely purchase a permenant key for it. I would suggest you wait to really upgrade though, until some of the bugs are fixed. UNLESS, you have two seperate hard drives. WHY bother? ALL 64bit processors run great with 32bit OS. The only real 32bit processor is Core Duo (Yonah) but it is mainly for laptops. Other 32bit processors are outdated, relatively slow and would just make your life miserable.

depends what you are trying to burn. if it's data, you can use the default software. just copy files, insert a disc, and paste onto disc and burn. if it's ISO files, use infra recorder: infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/.

if you're trying to copy dvds, namely commercial dvds, keep in mind that you are most likely violating a copyright law. you can use Nero, which is not free, or Roxio, which is not free either, but may or may not be included with your computer. I don't think the new features that vista has are worth the teething problems accompanied with the new OS. I personally think sticking to windows xp media centre edition is the best idea. Best out there as far as windows OS goes. Its cheaper as well.
Vista is the biggest resource hog. I would hold off of Vista until at least Service Pack 1 is released. You can still purchase Dell and HP laptops (there may be others) with the option of XP. Your Adobe photoshop should be ok with Vista.

A great Windows password cracker is Ophcrack. This password cracker is based on rainbow tables rather than brute force, which means it doesn't take hours and days to run, rather only 20 mins or so.

Just go into the device manager ans see if the driver needs to be updated.
If you have a sound (located inside your computer) card and it is made by a company named Creative then that is your problem. It is not your speakers but your sound card that your speakers are hooked into on the back of your computer that is not working. The Dell web site might have a sound card driver download that might help you but if the sound card is from Creative then your problem might never get solved as Creative has still never released any workable upgrades to fix their sound card problems with Vista.

Edit update: One more thought. The Creative sound cards work great in XP and could be the main reason for your sound lose due to your Vista upgrade. As a computer expert for over 10 years I would go back to XP and run Vista only in a brand new computer. I run computers for Uncle Sam and we are still using Windows 2000/XP and will for at least another 5 years. I do not see Vista ever getting cleared for use. To many problems.
Aren't your speakers. It is your sound card. It's probably not compatible with vista. You can either go to microsoft website and check for drivers updates or if you know your sound card's brand, you can go to the website and find out. (Tip: if th speakers hook up to the top in the back, the sound card is integrated in your mother board, if it's in the bottom you have an actual sound card). If your computer is some sort of brand like compaq, or dell, or something like that, you can find your computer's components info in their websites.

Make sure you install all of the drivers for the computer also.

If you do not have a drivers disk in addition to the Vista disk taht you installed, you may need to go to the manufacturer's website and see if they have a support page where you can download them. I would bet that this would take care of your problem.
Have you reinstalled the driver for it? Check your hardware manager for devices not installed then check your installation disc for the right driver. Sometimes there are several different drivers for wifi.

If you have a problem finding the driver, punch in your pc make and model number into google and you should find them.
Best help is to do what I did, format drive, install XP pro, throw vista in trash where it belongs or better still sue microsoft for selling such bad software.

Yes, the aero and flip 3d features will be disabled. Also in 512mb of ram vista ultimate will run even slower than snail just because in ultimate version there are many more features that need memory. So it will be damn slow. Probably, if vista setup checks for adequate system requirements, it will not even install.

Those features such as AERO and FLIP will not work, the system will run those heavy duty features based on your system performance scoring which Vista calculates during and after install. If your system doesnt meet the required score then it automatically disables those features.

Well, basically I have Windows Vista. I'd like to use my computer and its applications as much as possible, make it a multi-functional tool. What I'm interested in is if Windows Vista would happen to have an alarm clock application installed?

I don't see any Gadgets for Win. Vista to use as an alarm clock in the Side Bar. I recommend using Yahoo Widgets for your desktop. Get the Neon Clock widget it has the loudest Alarms (in my opinion) or Digital Clock widget, it has an alarm as well (I have not used it).

other then that i can't really find any 939 boards which themselves support Vista although it shouldn't be too big of a deal.

Vista is meant to make use of the 64bit core, it should still run on a non Vista specialised board, it just... wont be as good.
Boy, did I work at this one (to no avail) - the problem with trying to find a socket 939 mobo that will definitely work with Vista is the age of those motherboards. Socket 939s stopped sometime in 2004, and apparently, while just about all of that generation of motherboard was certified for XP, its only the socket AM2 motherboards that are certified for Vista. I checked Abit, Asus, Biostar, ECS, and Gigabyte, and no one had socket 939 mobos with Vista drivers.

HOWEVER! I did a quick check of my PC, where I have Vista running in a virtual machine, and my PC is a socket 939 system from Gateway, with the Nvidia C51 chipset and GeForce 6100 onboard video - similar to many socket 939 mobos I looked at. Since that's one of the most common chipsets for socket 939 systems, and since the K8T890 in your Asus motherboard is also one of the most common chipsets of the time for socket 939 systems, I'd say you've got a very good chance that it will work with Vista. Granted, I could only find one K8T890 motherboard that's definitely certified for Vista (and it was socket AM2), but I'd still say its a good bet it will work with Vista. Hope this helps.

You can get either. Depending on the version of Vista you're looking to install, a full version may be cheaper that the upgrade version. You DO NOT have to install XP on the partition to install Vista. Start the Vista installation and at some point it will ask for your original XP CD and COA (serial number).

Shop around, and DON'T buy Vista at a retail store. You pay hundreds more than if you buy it online somewhere.

Hi there. I want to set up a wireless Connection from my Master Computer (running Vista) to a different computer running XP. The problem is that when I insert the usb flash drive into the XP computer, It says it cannot install the wireless network because the computer is using a different version of windows. Oh, and to make matters worse, I lost the CD that came with the network card.

You don't really need anything special. My main desktop computer is running XP pro and this machine I'm typing to you on is running Vista Premium. I use a store bought router and its configured with all the security that it comes with.

For some reason, most of the files are in duplicate - I didn't think you could have 2 identical files in one folder anyway! The deal is this - you can install it on two computers. However, it can only be activated on one computer at a time. The reason for this is that if you make significant hardware upgrades it will be interpreted as a second computer, and so they set it up like this so you can do hardware upgrades without purchasing a new copy of Vista. But it will deactivate the first version (which makes sense if you're installing it twice on the same computer) and only activate the second copy.

So what it really comes down to is activation. When you install Vista, you have 30 days to activate it. When you do this, it connects to the microsoft server and makes sure that this version hasn't been used already. If it has, it won't activate. You have 30 days of use before it goes into reduced functionality mode, where it deletes your start menu and all desktop shortcuts and won't do anything but connect you to the microsoft site to purchase a legal copy.

If your friend's computer has Vista installed on it, it's probably been activated. If you install it on your computer, it will either deactivate his copy (meaning he has 30 days of use) or refuse to activate on your computer. Plus neither of you will be able to reinstall it since it's already attempted to activate twice. Or, they may mark that serial number as pirated and not let either of you activate.

Depends on what you mean by "restore". If you have a bunch of stuff you want to save, and you can still boot your machine then the first step would be to back up all that stuff to CD, DVD, USB drive, etc. Then if you have a restore disk that came w/ the machine simply boot to it and follow your nose. If you just have the OS on a disk then boot to that, after backing up your stuff of course, then you will need to delete the partition the OS is on, re-create the partition, format it, and install the OS. After you get the OS on the machine you will need to run all the windows updates, install antivirus, re-install all your software, and then put your backed up files back on teh machine.

Use a cd.
copy the files onto a writeable cd. for two reasons

(1) you will always have a copy of them

(2) it is easier to copy files and folders to and from cd's

USB link cables are crap. Either get a USB hard-disk, or move the files via your network. If you do not have a network, buy an ethernet cross-over cable, and link your machines that way.

EDIT: in your position, I would simply mount my old drive in the new box as a slave, then copy the files directly.

ms office is an optional package for additional price for some retailers. new computers doesn't come with it so you always have to buy it.
MS Powerpoint is a sub-program of the MS Office suite. You can get it separate, but why wouldn't you just get the MS Office package and have Word, Excel %26 Powerpoint at your fingertips.

And no, MS Office does not come standard with new computers. That's a $250+ program which Microshaft is not about to give away. You could download an illegal copy from somewhere on the internet, but that's up to you to do your own research...
Most computers, new, come equipped with a trial of Microsoft Office (now 2007); you can use the trial of Office which has PowerPoint or just download the trial from http://office.microsoft.com.

PP is a part of the MS Office suit, you won't find it in any other suit.
If you buy a new computer with Vista, you get Works 8.5 with it...that has Powerpoint bundled with it

We have deleted the items from the desktop and then from the trash, but every morning when we logon the deleted items have returned to the desktop again.

Also...we can't seem to save anything to 'my documents' - can only save to the desktop.

We are on a network server.

Any ideas on how we can fix this?

My hubby logged on to an adult site, which he said was "free." Now we have this flashing warning that tells us we have a "probable" chance of getting a virus. We have McAfee, so I know the computer is protected. (Protected Mode is On). You can close this warning off, but it pops up all the time. Don't know how to get it off. There is more than one site doing this. I'm sure my hubby clicked OK instead of "no." There have been various virus scan software that I've had to delete or uninstall. Do I have to download the free trial and uninstall? Or will I have to keep doing this?

I'd guess that an adware/spyware installed on your computer when he went to that site. And, that adware is trying to get you to act on the ad by scaring you about a "probable" virus.

First, I'd recommend that you do not click on it at all. Second, do you have McAfee anti-virus or Security Suite (which includes anti-spy)? Because you'll need to run an anti-spy program to get rid of what's on your computer. You could run your Windows Defender to see if that will clear it. There are also other free anti-spy programs you could run, such as AVG:

Do you just have a cross-over cable from one computer to the other or do you have a router?

The router will take care of Internet sharing.

Whichever computer has the printer attached to it, go to Control Panel %26gt; Printers and right click on the printer and then Sharing. Turn Sharing on.

On the other machine have windows look for a networked printer.

Folders can be shared by right-clicking on them and going to Advanced (I believe) and enabling sharing)

Duta Vista Suites was very spacious (we had 3 bedrooms for 2 people) with a very good offer. We had our own balcony, fully equipped kitchen and easy access to the pool too.

The apartment was clean though would have needed a bit renovation. The location was bad %26 practically nothing interesting there, we needed to take a cab averytime to get anywhere. The staff was very friendly.

If you just want to get a spacious place for sleeping, this would be a good option.
