I'm looking into the Dell XPS M1710, I understand it is predominately a gaming laptop but, as a graphic designer can someone tell me how it is for using design applications such as Photoshop, Flash, Carerra, Poser, 3D modeling, Animation programs, etc? For designing, is there really much more advantages using a Core 2 Duo vs a Core Duo? Or does Core 2 Duo just work best for gamers? Please explain your answers in depth. Thanks.
Using a Dell XPS M1710 for graphic design use? Should I buy it, will my software be compatible with Vista?panda

Dell XPS is just a name, it doesn't mean anything, they just think they can charge more for it. For graphic design, I am going to reccomend the Inspiron 1720/1721. This model has a nice 17in screen. Next I am going to reccomend the core 2 duo T7250. It's not "meant" for gaming, it just has supreme processing power, which in turn helps gaming a lot. But for graphic design, it will be awesome. Since it is a dell, I guess you can go with Vista Home Premium (Hopefully your programs are compatible with vista). 4gb of memory would be nice to have for doing work and using vista, but it is crazy expensive. 2gb should be good enough, and you can always upgrade when memory prices fall. Since you won't be doing any gaming, the standard X3100 intel graphics should be good enough, and not too bad if you want to play a game that is 3-4 yrs old. It is made to handle Vista's graphics, so they should work together. As for the hard drive, I don't know how much stuff you are going to need to store, since you can only get a 5400rpm drive in the insprion, any size will do. The 160gb is probably the best bang for the buck. You can add a DVD burner if you like. With all these goodies and a basic warrenty, you are looking at $1300. This comes out well below the price of an XPS and should have roughly the same performance.
