Why does new Windows Vista freeze so often?

I just bought a new Windows Vista from Dell. It is freezing up to 20 times a day, if not more. The only thing that is on the computer is a few Microsoft Word files and downloaded songs. Those songs could be bringing viruses with them, but I doubt it. I use Control + Alt + Delete to stop it from freezing, but that doesn't seem to help. It is a Windows Vista Home Basic. I think there are only 45 or so songs in Windows Media Player but thats one of very few things that are downloaded on the computer. Also, I have DSL internet. I had a router installed on the computer with the DSL modem on to it to send the internet here. The Vista is slower, and the one with the modem is faster and is a Windows XP.

It might have a defect in it or a bad peice of hardware. It may also just not be able to run all the preinstalled software that Dell puts on their computer. Perhaps you should call Dell's tech support. It really shouldn't be freezing.
If you don't have enough Ram memory for Vista, you're gonna' have problems. What John said is good advice. I run Ubuntu with Beryl, makes Windows Aero look like a punk. To see this go to YouTube, and put Windows Aero vs Ubuntu+Beryl in the search bar. Check out the other vids about Ubuntu also,(to the right with the slider)

Do you have a 32 bit processor? A lot of us have. Vista is designed to run on 64 bit. To find out go Start - Control Panel - System which displays the info under the General tab. It may have disabled some of your drivers. To see if drivers are compatible with your system do the above - then Hardware tab and Driver Signing.
