AIM really has a hard time working, as do many other programs, should I just downgrade to XP?

Uninstall Vista. Resort to Linux or XP. Preferably Linux. Less viruses, less problems.

Make sure you have the most current (Vista) versions of Java and AIM. You do NOT want to downgrade. Some have done so but it's an expensive and complex process.
No, you need to research the conflicts you're having, that's what I had to do.
