Need to set up a wired home network with Vista & XP computers?

I have a laptop running on Vista and a desktop running on XP and I need to connect the two to share internet, files, and a printer; I currently have an ethernet cable hooked up to each so what do I do now?

You need a router of some sort hooked up to your broadband connection.

THen you need a work group so that you can share resources.

Do you just have a cross-over cable from one computer to the other or do you have a router?

The router will take care of Internet sharing.

Whichever computer has the printer attached to it, go to Control Panel %26gt; Printers and right click on the printer and then Sharing. Turn Sharing on.

On the other machine have windows look for a networked printer.

Folders can be shared by right-clicking on them and going to Advanced (I believe) and enabling sharing)
too much detail to discuss here.

im or email me.
You'll need a router if you want each to be able to connect to the internet at the same time.

Your DSL/Cable modem will plug into it's plug on the router, then you'll connect your computers using their ethernet cables to the router.
