How do people reformat their hard drive with vista from all the cluttered preinstalled stuff?

Everyone says that they reformatted their hard drive when they first buy their laptops because it is pre-installed with unneeded software. How do they go about doing this? Do they just uninstall the stuff they don't need or what do they do?

Insert the vista disk that came with your computer and start an installation/reinstallation. When asked which drive you want to install vista to, select your current one and choose to format it.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but I'm not all too familiar with vista.
