If you bought your PC new then it should have come with a copy of windows - either hidden in a system restore partition on your hard drive (which requires a system restore CD to activate), or the actual install CD. Part of the price of your PC should have been a legal copy of Windows XP, including an install/restore disk and a serial number (usually stuck to the outside of the case).

If you paid for a genuine copy of Windows and didn't get a restore/install CD or a serial number then you were ripped off - you should complain. Your copy of Windows XP might be a pirate copy.

If your machine is made by the same manufacturer as your brother's, then you should be able to activate your own restore partition with your brother's CD.

The first thing you should do is search for your own restore cd! If you can't find it, find out is your exact model number of your PC, then see if you can download a restore CD from the manufacturers website.

If you can't get one and have lost your own, you should buy a copy of Windows XP so that you can do future re-installs by yourself. If you've already paid for Windows in the price of the PC (it came with windows xp installed), then you should demand a restore or install cd and serial number!
