How do I connect a desktop with XP to a laptop with Vista using a crossover cable?

Just plug them into each other if you have a crossover, then set their ips to the same subnet using one of them as the gateway ip (eg your pc would be used as the gateway so assign its ip to the gateway ip address for both)

If you have Ethernet ports (10/100) this is a cheap connection. You need to buy a crossover cable. Do not use a standard cable!
